Distinct Magazine Promoting Cancer?

A simple favor from the staff of Tyler's Top Trends. Define Distinct. When the word distinct is brought to mind you think different in nature or quality. Something not like that of its' kind. In terms of magazines, Distinct Magazine definitely holds true to its' name. But not for reasons you would think.

The promotional photo of a Medoll with a cigarette laced through her fingers, released by Distinct Magazine provides a more distinct image than they may have bargained for. Distinct in what way you ask? Imagine an elderly man in a wheelchair, talking through a hole in his throat. A hole that wouldn't be there if it weren't for a lifetime of smoking cigarettes. Most importantly, imagine a cancer patient dying in a hospital somewhere due to an addiction to nicotine found in cigarrettes.

Do we have a right to accuse Distinct Magazine and its' founders of promoting cancer? Of course we do. Do we believe this promotion was intentional? No. Lastly, do we believe that this unintentional promotion of the number one leading cause of cancer can be righted? We certainly do. And though we would never want to interfere with a creation not that of our own, I'm sure Distinct Magazine would not want to interfere with the health of its' future readers.

  3. If we see models smoking all the time, not only in fashion shoots where they may be smoking fakes, but outside of their work, obviously smoking real cigarettes, why is it so bad that a virtual magazine has a virtual cigarette on it? Yes, it'll influence some people, but it's not the magazine that can be held responsible. If someone is so easily influenced by something so fake, then they shouldn't be seeing any of this magazine.

This comment is completely ridiculous. I'm not even sure where to begin.

First of all, I never said they were intentionally influencing anyone to smoke. I even went as far as saying their promotion of cancer(not cigarette smoking) was UNINTENTIONAL.

Second of all, influence can appear anywhere. In fact, the internet is one of the most influential outlets today. So saying that people are unable to influence through the internet is ridiculous.

Lastly, I think we're all aware of what they message was conveying. And that message wasn't "Rebel/bad girl look.". I am ALMOST positive that the spoiler was intended to convey a glamorous theme. However, smoking is not glamorous.

    @NoCo Chanel,
I like to believe that we are all easily influenced by many things. Fashion being one of those things. A lot of times if we see someone styled a certain way we mock that in our own fashion. Smoking is no different. That cover says, "smoking is glamorous", and someone might go as far to say "Hey, if smoking is glamorous, why shouldn't I smoke?". I agree, that is a bit outlandish, but stranger things have happened.

Also, they can be held completely responsible for creating a negatively influential magazine. Sure, this may not have been their intention but I believe they are capable of fixing a mistake.

  5. No I don't really think it is promoting cancer i don't really think by looking at a stardoll magazine that it would influence someone to take up smoking ! :) x

  6. This magazine is completely offensive to me. To others, I'm not sure how you feel, but cigarettes have negatively affected my family causing deaths and such. And now you're promoting it on a virtual website for teens and kids? Young kids are easily influenced by things that surround them, so this will have a great impact on them. Although, lovely graphics :D I just don't feel this is the right message we should be sending users,

  7. I am aware that this is a made up world, but when it gets to the point that people are making virtual magazines and writing about them on blog based off a virtual site - don't you think people are going to take it a little more seriously? We created this world ourselves and now we are all trying to destroy it.

The thing that bothers me most about seeing a cigarette in a Stardoll based magazine, is the fact that several girls and boy will be viewing this promotional photo. Numerous of those viewers are too young to be smoking legally. Do you see my point.

It is hard for me to like a magazine that does not even relate to me. And besides, I am sure everyone think it's glamourous, That was the intention.

  8. My Grandfather actually had a laryngectomy and thus had the whole in throat you mentioned from throat cancer caused by smoking. He passed away last year.

So I feel strongly about this subject and am very against smoking.

That being said, while I don't feel that smoking should be promoted on anything...I don't think that is Distinct Magazine's intention. I'm sure it is to look sophisticated and stand out.

Smoking is not sophisticated..it's a killer, but I think we all should be confident enough to know that and not let any person or advertisement convince us differently. We have our own minds..use them and take this for the entertainment that it's meant to be.

  9. I do realize that cigarette smoking can cause deaths and lung problems, but if people can be influenced to smoke by that tiny thing, then they shoudln't be on the internet.
But,you cannot buy cigarettes if you are under 18,and people 18 and over on stardoll, are sensible.

  10. This Is Simply Pathetic!!
These Girls Are Simply Promoting There Magazine With A Woman Holding A Cigarette Simply Because They Think Its "Avant-Garde"

Something Fashionable,When It In fact Holds A Health Risk To Anyone That Consumes The Harmful Chemicals Contained In These "Cancer Sticks"

This Is Something That Everyone Should Be Aware Of.

  11. Smoking is the popular trend for models in photoshoots. I don't think they are promoting cancer, just trying to follow the crowd. You can't tell a lot from this photo. They could be telling the dangers from smoking. Nobody can be 100% sure.

  12. I swear to god get a grip, I think that the cover is creative, okay yeah it may have somebody smoking. But it's just a magazine cover that isn't an actual magazine that you find in shops. Some people just smoke to help stress atleast it's better than to have beer and wine on the cover.
And all through life we are influenced by stuff. But you do not have to go around having a tiff over if a VIRTUAL magazine with a FAKE cigarette. We have bigger issues than a picture put magazine.

  13. I don't know what to think right now about this subject,
I don't think they were intending to make people think 'Smoking is so glamorous I'll go buy a pack right now.'

Although, the magazine is based off of a childrens/teens website.
Most people won't be stupid enough to think "oh, smoking is so glamorous, I wanna be glamorous too so I'll buy some"
but in the future, some of the younger children could be influenced to think that all gorgeous models smoke.
Its not super likely, but it could happen. COULD. happen. Its not just that magazine's cover, but if the person has saw photoshoots with cigarettes featured in them or some type of other way, they could be influenced.
    Just saying.

I don't really have a problem with it, and I certainly won't be smoking because of the cover or anything else for that matter in the future.
But with that said, for a virtual game with young children on it that could possibly be reading its inappropriate.

Like I said before, I'm sure they weren't intending for this to happen (for sure) or to convey that smoking is glamorous. If somebody is influenced by just a magazine cover to smoke, then they have some sort of problem.
Anyways, I think the graphics were good, but not spectacular. I certainly hope we don't see any more of that smoking theme in the magazine itself or I will be very disappointed.

  14. Personally couldn't care, my father smokes and I can't stand him so unless that was an actual study which proves that smoking will lower the chances of all virus (etc) - which will never happen - I'm a non-smoker for life. Anyway, this is a fashion magazine, no? Well where is the fashion, that is my concern, almost every spoiler is the same, with a few exceptions, it shows no fashion, just a hand! And same with the underwear Christmas magazines, Fashion is clothes, not skin...

  15. I think the media is a big influence on smoking to young people, but I personally don't think that a virtual magazine is going to make anyone think its cool!

  16. When Dirty Magazine released an image of Baya holding a cigarette nothing was said of it. Many magazines use the cigarette to give a magazine a certain effect. However I understand that the image of a cigarette may be offensive to some people (which I apologise for) but this definitely was not our intention. When Distinct's first issue is released you will understand this.

Oh, and thanks for the post :)

  17. I dint think Distinct magazine team, but i dont care if its artistic, you shouldnt put a cigarette on a magazine or on any form of media, virtual or real. It will influence some people, and i think they should have realised that b4 it was put up. I've seen first hand young people smoking, coz they've seen it on tv growing up.

  18. I like Zoe, but when it comes down to this particular spoiler it does disappoint me a little. Although I KNOW it is not their intention to spread cancer or something ridiculous like that, it IS their intention to stand out from the crowd, and although this might not be one of the best ways they can do it, they made a mistake. We all do, right? But it only makes us learn from them! Well, hopefully. I understand what they were trying to do. I think this is the look they were trying to accomplish:

    http://files.myopera.com/lyubvi/albums/743343/autoportrait,black,and,white,bw,camera,cigarette,model-2632dbb5cf6c6fe27b7e0f38a54f86ad_h.jpg

    and not this:

And I know some of you may be hating already, but everyone deserves a second chance, including these people. Don't bring their magazine down.

  20. Christ's sake. Just because I see a medoll with a cigarette does not mean i'm going to think "Ohh, that virtual doll has a cigarette, I think i'll go smoke one too...!" That's just stupid.

  22. if anyone is naive enough to start smoking because they see a virtual doll with a cigarette in their hand, then they shouldn't be allowed to use a computer. you see cigarettes everywhere. every major fashion magazine have used cigarettes in photo shoots. open your eyes. anyway, i actually really like the spoiler, its edgy and not the same up close pose spoiler we see all the time.
